Postoperative Instructions
Repair of Hypospadias

  1. Use appropriate dose of acetaminophen (Tylenol) for pain control. A Tylenol with Codeine prescription may be given.

  2. Do not use aspirin.

  3. Your child may tub bathe in three (3) days.

  4. If your child has a catheter, notify us if urine is not draining properly.

  5. If your child wears diapers, please change them frequently.

  6. If your child has a dressing, remove the dressing the next day and apply a small amount of triple antibiotic ointment (Neosporin) to the suture line four (4) times daily.

  7. If antibiotics were prescribed, please give them as directed to prevent infection.

  8. Ditropan (Oxybutynin) is given for bladder spasms. Use if your son is having bladder spasms. Follow directions.

  9. The stitches are absorbable. They will dissolve out on their own over 2-4 weeks.

  10. No riding toys for three (3) weeks.

  11. It is common to have some black and blueness, minor swelling, and blood in the urine.

  12. Your child may start with clear liquids the night after surgery then increase the next day as tolerated.

  13. Call anytime for excessive bleeding, persistent fever (over 101.6 degrees), etcetera.
