Postoperative Instructions
Ureteral Reimplantation

  1. Use appropriate dose of acetaminophen (Tylenol) or Motrin for pain control. You may receive a Tylenol with Codeine prescription for stronger pain control. Ditropan (Oxybutynin) may be prescribed for bladder spasms.

  2. Do not use aspirin.

  3. Your child may start with clear liquids the night after surgery then increase the next day as tolerated.

  4. Your child may be up and around as desired with limited physical activity. No physical education, no outside recess.

  5. Your child may have blood in the urine for the first seven to fourteen (7-14) days and may feel like he/she has to urinate frequently and urgently.

  6. No tub baths for three (3) days. Sponge bath only. If your child has trouble urinating postop, he/she may sit in a shallow bath to relieve bladder spasms/bladder pain.

  7. The stitches will dissolve out on their own; the Steri-Strips will peel off on their own in a few weeks.

  8. It will take several weeks for the wound to heal. Initially there may be some swelling and bruising.

  9. Call for excessive swelling, bleeding, infection or persistent fever over 100 degrees.

  10. A followup ultrasound will be performed in three to four (3-4) weeks.
