Pursue Fatherhood Once Again

Due to the increased success of modern surgical techniques, vasectomy reversals are now more common than ever. Whether you remarried, suffered the loss of a child, are fulfilling a religious obligation, or simply changed your mind, you can pursue fatherhood once again by having an outpatient-performed vasectomy reversal.

First-time Reversal
Microscopic Vasectomy

This outpatient surgery is for men having a reversal for the first time. It's performed with local anesthesia using microscopic sutures (finer than a human hair) with an operating microscope. The procedure only lasts approximately three hours, after which you may go home.

We generally start checking the semen for the presence of sperm after six to ten weeks, then monthly after that. Once sperm are found, patients are advised to freeze or bank some in case scar tissue should form and block the vas again.

Pregnancy may occur shortly after surgery, but most conceptions are delayed three to four months due to the "pipeline" effect.

Multiple Reversals
Epididymovasostomy

This outpatient surgery is for men who have experienced an unsuccessful reversal (vasovasostomy) often due to complications with the original vasectomy. The procedure only lasts approximately three hours, after which you may go home.

You will return to our office ten days after surgery for a healing evaluation, and then monthly for semen analysis.

Pregnancy rates are usually less following a VE. At this point, you are advised to do sperm banking as insurance against future sperm reduction.

Fast Recovery

You may return to work when you feel up to it. We recommend an ice pack to the scrotum for 24 hours, no heavy lifting or straining for 10 days, scrotal support for 10 days and no ejaculations for 10 days.

Real Patient Results

Over the last several years, Dr. Wise has tried to keep track of the outcome of the vasal reconstructions he has done. The following represents just 25 of his last 133 patients. Azo means that the sperm count after the reversal showed no sperm. There are some patients that did not respond, and were lost to follow up. Those sperm were left blank.

Next Step

Consultants are available in several satellite offices, but the vasectomy reversal surgery is always done at our main office at 25 Michigan Street, Suite 3300 in downtown Grand Rapids.
